INTERNATIONAL WINE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Have fun with your friends, your colleagues and clients and wine.

History

Back in 1992, a great friend of Jack’s asked him to run a tutored tasting for their staff and clients and, recalling how dry and dull these events can be, Jack set about creating the International Wine Championship, an event that has since been described as ‘the most entertaining wine tasting event in The City of London’.

So, what is an International Wine Championship?

It’s a gathering of 16 to 100+ people – ‘Players’ – who, after a warm welcome and a glass or two of bubbly, get put into teams of 4, 5, 6 or 7 with a championship questionnaire and blind-taste 6, 7 or 8 wines. As each wine is being tasted, Jack and his troops go from team to team giving subtle hints and clues as to what the wine may be and what it probably is not, adjusting the strength of the tips depending on whether the team in hand are experienced tasters or novices.

As and when everyone has had enough time to taste and fill out their answer sheets, Jack gives a resume on why the wine is not 3 of the 4 options and why it is the 4th and then answers the other questions.

Where do they take place?

These great events can be held in your offices if you have the appropriate facilities or space, or, in venues such as hotels, livery halls, art galleries or the panelled private dining rooms of gastropubs.

When do they take place?

They are hosted by companies as fun and cost-effective corporate entertainment for between 10 and 100+ clients and friends.

They are put on in lieu of Christmas parties, to celebrate the sealing of deals, to entertain interns or clients and show them the fun side of a serious city corporation, or bring together two or three departments who may work together but need an event to get to know each other better!

They are frequently run by companies who are hosting a conference which ends at, say, 5pm and they want to be highly entertained for a couple of hours before dinner starts at 7.30, for example, or, by companies who just want to thank their friends and clients for being just that…friends and clients.

Typically, a Championship will take 120 to 150 minutes to run through from the start of the occasion and after guests have all arrived to a warm welcome and a glass of bubbly through to prize-giving.
